Redbush?

Rooibos is a herbal tea derived from a South African plant. The name ‘rooibos’ actually means red bush, and so this is what it is sometimes referred to as. It has been a popular drink in South Africa for a long time, but recently it has been gaining popularity across all different countries because of its multiple health benefits and unique taste.

Rooibos tea is unique for a number of reasons, including its antioxidant properties, assisting with skin disorders such as acne. Although it may not completely rid you of your acne, it does have anti-inflammatory properties that help to prevent acne redness and big breakouts.

Did you know that rooibos can be a replacement for black decaf teas? Decaffeination is a chemical process and because meaning black teas can no longer be classed as a natural tea if gone through this process. Rooibos is naturally caffeine free, there’s no need to have it go through such a process – it’s completely natural! Because of this, it can assist with sleep and stress; just the decaf properties are beneficial in so many ways. It can be enjoyed the same way as a black tea, with or without milk and any time of day. It is said to have a slightly nutty and earthy taste.

This herbal tea also contains three specific antioxidants – polyphenols, aspalathin and quercetin. Each of these antioxidants has different properties, so let’s break them down:
    • Polyphenols; this antioxidant is anti-inflammatory and anti-viral, meaning that it’s perfect for colds and other such illnesses. It’s great for winter!
    • Aspalathin; this antioxidant has properties you would never have thought – blood sugar!
The reason for this is that it actually helps to balance glucose levels, help with insulin resistance and improve insulin secretion. This makes it perfect for helping with prevention or management of type 2 diabetes.
    • Quercetin; this antioxidant also has anti-inflammatory properties, helping with blood pressure.
